What Are Shopify's Fees?

Shopify charges several types of fees that affect your profit per order:

  • Monthly subscription: $39 (Basic), $105 (Shopify), $399 (Advanced), or $2,300 (Plus).
  • Credit card processing: 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, decreasing with higher plans. This applies to every transaction.
  • Third-party payment fees: If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, you pay an additional 0.2%-2.0% per transaction depending on your plan.
  • App costs: Most stores spend $50-$200/month on apps for reviews, email marketing, upsells, etc.

Hidden Costs of Shopify

Beyond the obvious subscription and processing fees, there are costs that many store owners overlook. Theme customization, premium apps, payment gateway fees (if not using Shopify Payments), transaction fees on gift cards, and Shopify Email credits beyond the free tier all add up. Refunds are another hidden cost: Shopify does not refund the transaction fee when you issue a refund to a customer. On a $50 order, that is $1.75 you lose even if you get the product back.

How to Calculate Shopify Profit

The formula for profit per order on Shopify:

Profit = Selling Price - COGS - Shipping - Card Fee - Tax - Refund Loss

For monthly profit, multiply profit per order by your order volume, then subtract fixed costs (subscription + apps). This gives you the true bottom line for your Shopify store.

Shopify Plan Comparison for Margins

Upgrading your Shopify plan lowers per-transaction fees but increases your fixed monthly cost. Here is when it makes sense to upgrade:

PlanMonthly FeeCard RateBest For
Basic$392.9%0-500 orders/mo
Shopify$1052.6%500-2,000 orders/mo
Advanced$3992.4%2,000-10,000 orders/mo
Plus$2,3002.15%10,000+ orders/mo

Tips to Reduce Shopify Costs

  • Use Shopify Payments — avoids the extra third-party transaction fee (0.2%-2.0%).
  • Audit your apps monthly — uninstall apps you do not actively use. Many stores pay for 15+ apps but only need 5.
  • Upgrade plans at the right time — calculate when the per-transaction savings exceed the higher monthly fee.
  • Negotiate Plus pricing — Shopify Plus pricing is negotiable for high-volume stores.
  • Use annual billing — Shopify offers a discount for paying annually instead of monthly.
