How to Use AI to Write Klaviyo Email Flows for Shopify

By Jack·March 18, 2026·9 min read

Klaviyo's Flows AI can generate a complete email automation from a single sentence. Describe what you want in plain language, and it builds the triggers, timing, splits, and email content. No drag-and-drop. No template hunting.

Combined with Shopify's real-time data sync (sub-200 millisecond latency on customer events), you can go from idea to live automated flow in under an hour. Automated flows generate 30x more revenue per recipient than manual campaigns, per Klaviyo's own benchmarks. That's not a small edge.

Here's how to use every AI feature Klaviyo offers to build flows that actually convert.

Step 1: Connect Klaviyo to Shopify (Properly)

Most stores install the Klaviyo app and assume they're done. They're not.

After installing Klaviyo from the Shopify App Store, verify these data points are flowing correctly:

  • Active on Site tracking (browsing behavior, needed for browse abandonment flows)
  • Started Checkout events (triggers cart abandonment flows)
  • Placed Order events (triggers post-purchase flows)
  • Product catalog sync (needed for dynamic product recommendations in emails)
  • Customer profiles (historical purchase data, used for predictive analytics)

Go to Klaviyo > Integrations > Shopify and check that all event types show recent activity. If "Active on Site" shows zero events, your on-site tracking snippet isn't installed correctly. This is the #1 setup mistake I see. Without it, browse abandonment flows won't fire.

Step 2: Use Flows AI to Generate Your First Flow

Navigate to Flows > Create Flow. You'll see the Flows AI option. Here's how it works:

  1. Type a natural language description of the flow you want. Example: "Create a 3-email cart abandonment sequence. First email 1 hour after abandonment with cart contents. Second email 24 hours later with product reviews. Third email 48 hours with a 10% discount."
  2. Flows AI generates the complete automation: trigger, timing delays, email content, conditional splits.
  3. Review each email. Edit the copy for your brand voice.
  4. Set the flow to "Manual" first (you approve each email before it sends) to verify quality.
  5. Switch to "Live" once you're confident in the output.

The more specific your prompt, the better the output. "Make a welcome series" gives generic results. "Create a 4-email welcome series for a premium skincare brand, first email delivers a 15% discount code, second email highlights our ingredients sourcing, third email shows before/after customer photos, fourth email is urgency on the expiring discount" gives you something you can actually use.

Step 3: Build the 5 Core Flows

Every Shopify store needs these 5 flows running. Here's the AI prompt strategy for each one.

FlowTriggerEmailsAI Prompt Approach
Welcome SeriesSubscribes to list3-5Include brand story, offer, social proof, product education
Cart AbandonmentStarted Checkout3Reminder, social proof, discount (escalating urgency)

Browse AbandonmentActive on Site (viewed product)2Reminder with product image, social proof follow-up
WinbackDays since last purchase (60-90)3We miss you, what's new, final offer

Side note: Klaviyo also offers 80+ pre-built flow templates. If you're in a hurry, start with a template and use AI to customize it rather than building from scratch. The templates are based on what performs best across Klaviyo's entire customer base, so they're a solid starting point.

Step 4: Turn On AI Subject Lines

Klaviyo's subject line assistant is one of its strongest AI features. It analyzes your historical email performance data to find which keywords and emotional triggers drive opens for your specific audience.

Here's how to use it in flows:

  1. Open any email in a flow.
  2. Click on the subject line field.
  3. Click the AI subject line assistant icon.
  4. It generates multiple variants based on the email content and your brand's past performance.
  5. Select the one that fits your voice, or use it as a starting point.

You can also enable automated A/B testing on subject lines within flows. Klaviyo will send variant A to a small percentage, variant B to another small percentage, then automatically send the winner to the rest. This runs continuously, so your subject lines keep improving over time.

I think the subject line assistant is the single most underused Klaviyo feature. Most store owners write one subject line and move on. Testing 3-5 variants per email in a flow costs nothing extra and can lift open rates significantly.

Step 5: Enable Smart Send Time

Smart Send Time predicts when each individual subscriber is most likely to open their email. Instead of sending your cart abandonment email at exactly 1 hour for everyone, Klaviyo holds it until each subscriber's optimal window.

To enable it: open any flow email, go to Sending Settings, and toggle on Smart Send Time.

One caveat: Smart Send Time needs enough historical data per subscriber to work well. For new subscribers with no open history, it falls back to your default send time. For subscribers with even a few weeks of data, it starts making meaningful predictions. Research from ALM Corp shows send-time optimization lifts open rates by roughly 26% and click-through rates by 41%.

Step 6: Add Predictive Segments and Conditional Splits

This is where Klaviyo's AI gets really interesting. Predictive analytics gives you fields on every customer profile:

  • Predicted CLV: How much this customer is expected to spend over their lifetime.
  • Predicted next order date: When they're likely to buy again.
  • Churn risk: Low, medium, or high likelihood of not returning.
  • Average days between orders: Their personal purchase cycle.

Use these in conditional splits within your flows. For example, in your post-purchase flow:

  • If Predicted CLV is high: send a VIP thank-you with early access to new products.
  • If Predicted CLV is low: send a standard thank-you with a cross-sell recommendation.
  • If churn risk is high: skip the review request and send a retention offer instead.

This kind of branching logic used to require a data analyst. Now Klaviyo calculates it automatically based on your Shopify data. Brands using AI-driven segments see revenue per recipient increase by 18-45% compared to standard demographic segmentation, according to Klaviyo's own data.

Step 7: Use AI for Email Content Generation

Beyond flows and subject lines, Klaviyo's AI can generate full email content. Describe your promotion or goal, and it builds out the copy, layout, images, and buttons.

Where this works well:

  • Product launch announcement emails
  • Sale/promotion templates
  • Re-engagement copy variants
  • Holiday and seasonal campaign drafts

Where it needs human editing:

  • Brand storytelling (AI doesn't know your founding story)
  • Humor or personality-driven copy (AI plays it safe)
  • Sensitive communications (order issues, refunds, recalls)

Treat AI-generated content as a first draft. The biggest mistake I see is stores publishing AI copy without any editing. It reads generic. Your customers will notice, even if they can't articulate why it feels off.

What to Do This Week

If you're on Klaviyo and Shopify already, here's your action list:

  1. Verify your Shopify integration is passing all event types (especially Active on Site)
  2. Use Flows AI to generate your cart abandonment and welcome series
  3. Enable Smart Send Time on every flow email
  4. Turn on AI subject line A/B testing in your top 2 flows
  5. Add at least one predictive analytics split (CLV or churn risk) to your post-purchase flow

That's 5 changes you can make this week that will compound over every email you send going forward. None of them cost extra. They're already in your Klaviyo plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Klaviyo AI write entire email flows?

Yes. Klaviyo's Flows AI accepts natural language prompts and generates the full automation, including triggers, timing delays, conditional splits, and email content. You'll want to review and edit the copy for brand voice, but the structure and logic are production-ready. The more specific your prompt, the better the output.

Is Klaviyo AI included in the free plan?

Some features are. The free plan (up to 250 contacts, 500 monthly sends) includes basic AI like the subject line assistant and flow templates. Advanced features like predictive analytics, Smart Send Time, and Flows AI require a paid plan starting at $20/month. For most Shopify stores, the paid plan is worth it for predictive analytics alone.

How does Klaviyo's AI subject line generator work?

It analyzes your brand's historical email performance to identify which keywords, emotional triggers, and formats drive the highest open rates for your specific audience. It generates multiple variants per email and can automatically A/B test them within flows, routing more traffic to the winning version in real time. The more emails you send, the smarter it gets.

Does Klaviyo integrate directly with Shopify?

Yes, and it's one of the deepest integrations in the Shopify ecosystem. Customer events flow into Klaviyo in sub-200 milliseconds, creating unified profiles with purchase history, browsing behavior, cart activity, and more. Klaviyo integrates with 350+ tools total, but the Shopify connection is the most feature-rich.
